Soller - Alaro - Puig Mayor

55 miles - 88 kms

cycling from Soller to Alaro Leaving Soller on the MA-11 (the old C711), you'll soon leave most of the traffic behind you as you turn off before the tunnel to tackle the Coll de Soller (MA-11A). At 500 metres high, the pass is famous for its numerous hairpin bends. This used to be the main road between Soller and Palma before the tunnel was built in the 1990s. Having been resurfaced in 2005, the road is a very popular with cyclists. Once at the top you have spectacular views down to the Bay of Palma. From here you ride down through the olive terraces till rejoining the main road on the other side of the tunnel.
Exciting cycle tour through AlaroAfter 2 miles follow the sign off to Bunyola. You will ride over the Soller - Palma railway tracks and into the town centre. Near the main square take the MA-2100 (the old PM210) in the direction of Orient and Alaro. You are now in the Alaro valley. Cycling through here you are more likely to encounter fellow cyclists than cars as the road rolls up and down, through the small hamlets of Orient and on to Alaro.
Once in Alaro, we suggest taking the MA-2110 signed to Lloseta and then the MA-2113, which is the old road to Selva.
The road now begins to wind back up into the Tramuntana mountain range along the MA-2130 (the old PM213).
It won't be long before you pass Caimari and then it's up to the Monastery of Lluc.
We suggest a break here to visit the Monastery and its surrounding gardens.
Once back on the bike the road continues to undulate as it offers great views over the Torrent de Pareis and beyond to the sea.
Following the road south, you'll pass the Gorg Blau reservoir and not long afterwards the Cuber.
Fantastic cycle routes across MallorcaThe next point of interest is the road opposite the old military base.
This road goes to the top of the Puig Mayor, Mallorca's highest mountain at over 1400 metres.
The road is closed to the public for all but one day of the year, when it is opened for the Trencagarrons cycle race, which takes place every September.
The route up is hard with some sections up to 16% with an average of 11% over nearly 5 miles.
But for you now, it's on through the tunnel and the fast 10 mile descent back down to Soller.
